Aircraft was flown in Florida by USAF on Tyndall and Eglin. Went to a high school as a project. Later restored to flying condition by Gerry Butterworth / Florida Aircraft Painting in the period 1988-1991. I bought it in August 1998, it was ferried via Iceland same summer. I have flown it here (Denmark) and kept it in a heated hangar here since. Last annual Aug 2001 Last flown Aug. 2002
This is not an air show winner. It has performed well, carries a few snags that I have chosen to fly with for the last years. I trust it, have been across a lot of water several times, flown into 4,000 feet runways but it is not immaculate or perfect. It has civilised avionics, mostly Narco and it mostly works in the front seat. Definitely VFR except en-route. Installed vacuum system to get reasonable gyros. Large civil oxy tank installed. Large baggage hold in the nose, perfect for chairs and tents for weekends away at airshows. Nascar seats instead of bang seats. Parachutes available with the aircraft. Civil intercom, I modified my helmet to work in it with D-C mike. Fairly new giant truck batteries in the nose, can start it if needed.
Overall ? paint, interior, authentic, snag list that seems to be more or less permanent = 6/10
Money needed to make it perfect ? not much in terms of spares, mostly labour and time.
Spares are cheap and plentiful.
